Why do I keep replaying that conversation?

You said one awkward thing at six, and by ten you've heard it forty times. It feels like work. Psychologists have a name for it, rumination: going over the same upset again and again. In 2008, three of them pulled together years of research on it. Across the studies, it made low moods worse and thoughts more negative. It also got in the way of solving the actual problem. Stepping away for a while, with something pleasant, lifted low moods in dozens of experiments. Thinking it through ends with a next step. Replaying just starts over. So tonight, tell it once: what happened, how you feel, and one next step. Then stop.
