Why do bad moments stick more than good ones?

· Source: Baumeister, Bratslavsky, Finkenauer & Vohs, Review of General Psychology, 2001

One sharp moment can outweigh a whole good day. The good can still win, by numbers.

Why do bad moments stick more than good ones?

Bad usually outweighs good of the same size. A 2001 review of research across psychology found bad events tend to have bigger effects than good ones, from mood to feedback. In memory the pattern was weaker, and the sting of bad memories faded faster. Say the bad part once. Then count the good. Name each good moment of the day with one detail, and give them as much time as the bad one got. Keep the whole day, not just the sharp part. Halflight writes it down under today’s date, so you can read back how it really went.
