Does everyone notice my mistake?

An awkward moment feels huge from the inside. In experiments, people expected more witnesses to their embarrassment than there really were.
Does everyone notice my mistake?
Fewer noticed than people expected. People asked to wear an embarrassing T-shirt overestimated how many observers would be able to recall what was on it. The researchers called this the spotlight effect: we feel more noticed than we are. Ask who really noticed. Say the moment in two sentences. Then think of yesterday: whose small slips do you still remember? Say it once. Then let it be done. Halflight keeps it under today’s date, so a month from now you can see how it looks.
