Which one would you rather repeat? Hand one: sixty seconds in cold water, at fourteen degrees. Hand two: the same sixty seconds, then thirty more, while the water slowly warms to fifteen. So hand two has all of hand one's pain, and then some more. In 1993, a clear majority chose to repeat hand two. They chose more pain, because it ended more gently.
